Luang Namtha is one of the largest towns in northern Laos. The town takes its name from the Nam Tha, a tributary of the Mekong on whose banks it now lies. The original town was destroyed during the Second Indochina War. The main district, in the north, is therefore fairly recent. The southern part, an old residential district somewhat overlooked by tourism, is undoubtedly the most interesting part of the town.
