Every November, on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, Vientiane comes alive for the biggest celebration in the country. For a full week, the esplanade of Pha That Luang \u2014 the great golden stupa that towers over the capital \u2014 turns into an immense popular and spiritual gathering: Boun That Luang<\/strong>. Tens of thousands of pilgrims from every province, thousands of monks, a giant fair, candlelit processions around the gilded spire… It is the most intense moment of the year in Vientiane, and one of the most moving spectacles Laos can offer a traveller. In 2026, the main day falls on Tuesday 24 November<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Pha That Luang, the spiritual heart of Laos<\/h2>\n

You cannot grasp this festival without understanding what the monument means. Pha That Luang is not just another stupa: it is the national symbol of Laos, the very image that appears on the country’s official seal. Legend holds that it enshrines a relic of the Buddha brought here more than two thousand years ago. The present structure, 45 metres tall and covered in gold, was raised in the 16th century by King Setthathirat, when the capital of the Lane Xang kingdom moved from Luang Prabang to Vientiane. Destroyed and restored several times over a turbulent history, it remains the most revered site in the country.<\/p>\n

Boun That Luang 2026: dates to remember<\/h2>\n

The festival follows the Lao lunar calendar and peaks at the full moon of the twelfth month. In 2026 the main religious ceremonies take place around 24 November<\/strong>, with festivities stretching over roughly a week. In the days leading up to it, a huge trade and craft fair fills the esplanade: food stalls, handicrafts from every province, concerts, funfair rides \u2014 a nationwide carnival atmosphere you will find nowhere else in Laos.<\/p>\n

What not to miss<\/h2>\n

The tak bat: alms-giving to thousands of monks<\/h3>\n

At dawn on the main day, thousands of monks from all over the country sit in long rows facing the faithful, who fill their bowls with sticky rice, flowers, banknotes and offerings. It is one of the largest monastic gatherings in Southeast Asia \u2014 an experience of rare intensity, best lived at first light.<\/p>\n

The phasat pheung, castles of wax<\/h3>\n

Families, neighbourhoods and institutions craft phasat pheung<\/em>, ornate structures decorated with yellow wax flowers and banknotes, carried in procession to the stupa. The parades, with music and dancing, circle That Luang three times before laying down their offerings.<\/p>\n

The vien thien: the candlelight circumambulation<\/h3>\n

On full-moon night, everyone buys a candle and a small posy of flowers, then joins the slow-moving crowd circling the illuminated stupa three times. Seen from a little height, the esplanade becomes a river of flames flowing around the gold of the monument \u2014 the single most powerful image of the festival.<\/p>\n

Here is the festival’s best-kept secret: tikhi<\/em>, a traditional game close to field hockey, played with wooden sticks and a ball cut from bamboo root. Tradition pits a team of officials against a team of villagers \u2014 and a victory for the people is said to promise a prosperous year for the whole country. The atmosphere around the pitch is fantastic.<\/p>\n
