Not so long ago, getting from Vientiane to Luang Prabang meant ten to twelve hours on a winding mountain road, motion sickness included, arriving after dark. Since the Laos-China Railway<\/strong> opened, the same journey takes under two hours<\/strong>. It is probably the single biggest change to travel in Laos in twenty years.<\/p>\n

Modern as it is, though, this train is not booked like a European high-speed service. Tickets go on sale late, stations sit well outside the towns, and security confiscates things you would never think about. Here is what we explain to our travellers every week, from our office in Vientiane.<\/p>\n

The Laos-China Railway at a glance<\/h2>\n

The line runs from Vientiane to Boten<\/strong> on the Chinese border, roughly 420 kilometres, continuing on to Kunming on the Chinese side. It cuts straight through the mountainous heart of the country: more than half the route is in tunnels or on viaducts, and the open stretches offer superb views over karst peaks and rice fields.<\/p>\n
