After our guide to combining Laos and Cambodia, here is the other question travelers ask us most: can you visit Laos and Vietnam in one trip?<\/strong> You certainly can – and it is one of the most rewarding contrasts in Southeast Asia. On one side, the slow rhythm of the Mekong; on the other, the energy of Vietnam’s cities and the limestone seascape of Halong Bay – just over an hour’s flight apart. August to October is when most dry-season departures are planned, so now is the time to get the route, the borders and the season right.<\/p>\n

Why combine Laos and Vietnam?<\/h2>\n

Because the two countries could hardly be more different, and that is exactly what makes the trip feel complete. Laos moves slowly: monks collecting alms at dawn in Luang Prabang, villages along the Nam Ou river, sunsets over the Mekong. Vietnam moves fast: Hanoi’s Old Quarter, a bowl of pho eaten on a plastic stool, junks gliding between the karst pillars of Halong Bay. You will pass more scooters in ten minutes in Hanoi than in a whole week in Laos.<\/p>\n

The logistics are refreshingly simple: direct flights link Luang Prabang and Hanoi in about 1 hour 10 minutes<\/strong>, operated by Lao Airlines and Vietnam Airlines on most days of the week, and Hanoi is also connected to Vientiane nonstop. No day is lost in transit – you can watch the sun rise over the Mekong and eat dinner in Hanoi’s Old Quarter the same evening.<\/p>\n

Visas: simpler than you might think<\/h2>\n

Vietnam has made things easy for many visitors. Citizens of France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain and several other European countries currently enter Vietnam visa-free for stays of up to 45 days<\/strong>, a policy in force until March 2028. The only requirement is a passport valid for at least six months after arrival. Travelers from the United States, Canada, Australia and most other countries apply for Vietnam’s 90-day e-visa on the official portal evisa.gov.vn<\/strong> (25 USD single entry, 50 USD multiple entry). Avoid look-alike agency websites that charge double for the same document.<\/p>\n

For Laos, the official e-visa is issued at laoevisa.gov.la<\/strong> – but note that it is only accepted at certain entry points: the airports of Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Pakse, Friendship Bridges I, II and IV, Boten, and the Laos-China railway stations. It is not valid at the land borders between Laos and Vietnam.<\/strong> That one detail should decide the direction of your trip.<\/p>\n

Which direction should you travel?<\/h2>\n

Our advice as a local agency: start in Laos, finish in Vietnam.<\/strong> Fly into Laos with your e-visa, travel down the country at your own pace, then cross into Vietnam – by air or overland – where many nationalities need no visa at all. Nothing can go wrong at the border.<\/p>\n

The reverse works too, but needs more care: entering Laos overland from Vietnam means obtaining a Lao visa on arrival, which is issued at the main international checkpoints – but not at all of them. Have your crossing point confirmed before you set off, or simply ask us: checking borders is part of our job.<\/p>\n

Three itineraries that work<\/h2>\n

The essentials in 12 to 15 days<\/h3>\n

The classic route: three nights in Luang Prabang<\/strong> (the alms-giving ceremony, Kuang Si waterfalls, Pak Ou caves), on to Vang Vieng<\/strong> and its karst scenery – now just an hour away by train – then easy-going Vientiane<\/strong>. Fly to Hanoi<\/strong>, spend two days in the Old Quarter, then sleep aboard a junk in Halong Bay<\/strong>. Three weeks: add central Vietnam<\/h3>\n

With one more week, the trip changes scale: after Hanoi and Halong, head south to Hue<\/strong>, the former imperial capital, and Hoi An<\/strong>, the lantern-lit trading town on the UNESCO list. On the Lao side, three weeks also leave room for the 4000 Islands or the Bolaven Plateau before crossing over – the Lao Bao border gate, near Savannakhet, leads straight to Hue.<\/p>\n

The northern route, for slow travelers<\/h3>\n

Our favorite, far from the crowds: from Luang Prabang, head up to Nong Khiaw<\/strong> and its cliffs, then continue by boat along the Nam Ou river to Muang Khua<\/strong>. From there, the Tay Trang border gate opens onto Dien Bien Phu<\/strong>, then the terraced rice fields of northern Vietnam and Hanoi. Very few travelers make this crossing – none of them forget it. Borders and transport: what to know<\/h2>\n

Flying remains the easiest option: Luang Prabang to Hanoi nonstop<\/strong>, or Vientiane to Hanoi. Overland links exist but are earned: the Vientiane-Hanoi bus via the Cau Treo border gate runs for a full day and night – an adventure in itself, best left to hardened travelers.<\/p>\n

For overland crossings, eight international border gates between the two countries accept Vietnam’s e-visa, from north to south: Tay Trang (for Dien Bien Phu), Na Meo, Nam Can, Cau Treo, Cha Lo, La Lay, Lao Bao (for Hue) and Bo Y. Formalities are slower than at the airports: allow extra time, carry small banknotes, and pack some patience.<\/p>\n

When to go?<\/h2>\n

November to March<\/strong> is the sweet spot for both countries: dry season in Laos, clear skies and gentle heat. Two nuances are worth knowing. Northern Vietnam is cool and often misty from December to February – bring a fleece for Halong Bay and the mountains. Central Vietnam (Hue, Hoi An) has its typhoon season from September to early November, so it is best visited from December onwards. Do I need a visa for a Laos and Vietnam trip?<\/h3>\n

For Vietnam, citizens of France, the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and several other countries enter visa-free for up to 45 days; most other nationalities use the official 90-day e-visa (evisa.gov.vn).
