Sample Itinerary: Complete Laos in 21 Days

Days 1-3: Vientiane

Arrival in the most peaceful capital in Southeast Asia. That Luang, Patuxai, Buddha Park, night market. Dinner by the Mekong.

Days 4-6: Vang Vieng

Between karsts and rivers. Tham Chang, Tham Poukham, kayaking, cycling through rice paddies. Optional: zip-lining over limestone peaks.

Days 7-11: Luang Prabang

Five days to savor the UNESCO city. Tak bat at sunrise, Wat Xieng Thong, Kuang Si Falls, Pak Ou Caves, Mekong cruise. Lao cooking class. Night craft market.

Days 12-13: Northern Laos — Nong Khiaw or Muang Ngoi

Boat trip down the Nam Ou to fishing villages. Landscapes of cliffs and primary forest. Optional homestay.

Days 14-15: Plain of Jars (Phonsavan)

Flight from Luang Prabang. Megalithic jar sites, encounters with Hmong and Khmu communities, highland landscapes.

Days 16-18: Southern Laos — Pakse and Champassak

Flight to Pakse. Khmer temple of Vat Phou (UNESCO), Bolaven Plateau, Tad Fane and Tad Yuang waterfalls, coffee and tea plantations.

Days 19-21: The 4,000 Islands (Si Phan Don)

The Mekong archipelago, between hammocks and pirogues. Irrawaddy dolphins, Khone Phapheng Falls (the most powerful in Southeast Asia), sunsets over the river. Return to Pakse, return flight.
