Deux adresses privilégiées
In our address book, two hotels are part of the Asia Safari group: in the heart of the northern Laos mountains, on the lands of the ethnic minorities, Muang La Lodge is a beautiful ecolodge right on the banks of the Nam Pak river. Nicknamed the pearl of the north, it is a place cherished for its art of living and discovery. In the heart of the small town of Champassak, Residence Bassac is its little sister with an “Indochine” feel. A stone’s throw from the Mekong and the region’s must-see sites, guests come for its comfort, its dining and its range of exclusive experiences.
From northern to southern Laos …
In the high valleys of northern Laos or further south towards the Bolaven Plateau, homestay nights are an option that opens up treks in remote areas. These lodgings are clean and fitted with mosquito nets, and bedding and towels are provided. There is no private bathroom or WC, but washing facilities are available. In Luang Prabang, the hotels we have selected are ideally located on the peninsula, so you can come and go on your own in the former royal capital. In Vientiane, the current capital of Laos, we have chosen pretty buildings of colonial white, often with a small garden or an exotic garden and a swimming pool. In the province of Champassak, our favourites are small “Indochine”-style properties, like this former villa on Don Khone island, a little corner of paradise. Not everything is perfect there, but it is a wonderful place to unwind to the soothing rhythm of southern Laos and the Mekong. Cruising for a day, the Mekong is a north–south axis, travelled aboard small traditional boats, which can be privatised, for 4 or 5 people. For two or three nights, the superb Vat Phou with its 12 cabins takes you on board at Pakse for a real cruise in Laos, from site to site.
Book in advance
In Southeast Asia, Laos is appealing for its authenticity. However, hotel capacity is not increasing as fast as tourist numbers, which is a good thing. It is therefore advisable to start planning your trip in advance (about 6 months before your arrival). This will give you more hotel choices and, if you plan to take a Mekong cruise, you will be less constrained by potential fixed dates.

When to visit Laos?
From November to February, the weather is generally drier and temperatures are milder. March and April are often hotter. The rainy season, from May to October, brings lush green landscapes; we adapt the itinerary and transport to local conditions.

Jean-Paul Duvergé has worked in Laos since 2000. In 2002, he founded Asia Safari in Vientiane to design tailor-made trips in Laos and Indochina. Today, the agency’s French-Lao team plans each itinerary with its travellers and coordinates arrangements on the ground with its local guides and partners.

Laos covers 236,800 km² and had a population of around 7.9 million in 2025. Its capital is Vientiane, its official language is Lao and its currency is the Lao kip (LAK). Theravada Buddhism is the main religion. The country is in the UTC+7 time zone.

Lao culture
Theravada Buddhism has an important place in Laos, alongside a variety of cultural traditions. In Luang Prabang, the monks’ morning alms round is a religious ritual to observe with discretion and respect. Boun Pi Mai, Lao New Year in April, and Boun Ok Phansa, which marks the end of the Buddhist rains retreat, are among the events that shape the year.

The forests and protected areas of Laos are home to a variety of wildlife, including Asian elephants, gibbons and sun bears. Rivers, mountains and plateaus offer many opportunities to explore nature.
