Vang Vieng is explored on foot or by bicycle: most of our addresses are less than ten minutes from the centre. Green View Resort and the Sanctuary, on the Nam Ngum lake, are 25 km to the south.

Choosing where to stay in Vang Vieng
How many nights should you plan in Vang Vieng?
Two nights are enough for most travellers: one full day covers a cave, a swim in a blue lagoon and a sunset over the Nam Song. Three nights if you want to add kayaking, a hot-air balloon flight or the hike to the Pha Ngeun viewpoint.
Should you stay by the river or in town?
On the Nam Song you wake up to the karsts and enjoy quiet evenings — that is what most of our travellers are looking for. In town you gain the proximity of restaurants and tour agencies but lose the panorama. The two are only minutes apart.
Is Vang Vieng still the party town of fifteen years ago?
No. The floating bars closed in the early 2010s and the town has refocused on nature and outdoor activities. The atmosphere today is family-friendly, with a mix of Asian and Western visitors, and much busier since the Laos–China railway opened in 2021.
When is the best time to go?
October to April for the dry season and the light on the karsts. In the rainy season the landscapes are spectacularly green and the rice paddies superb, but the river can be too high for kayaking and some caves become inaccessible.
How do you get to Vang Vieng?
The high-speed train takes about 1 hour from Vientiane and 1 hour from Luang Prabang — today the simplest way. The road remains possible (3 to 4 hours from Vientiane) and more flexible for stops along the way. Asia Safari arranges all transfers.
