Where are they?
In Nong Khiaw, the bridge links the two banks in a five-minute walk. Muang Ngoi Neua is about fifteen kilometres to the north, by boat on the Nam Ou. The map reframes itself according to the filter you choose.

Choosing where to stay in Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi
How many nights should you plan?
Two nights in Nong Khiaw at the very least: one day to climb to a viewpoint above the valley and visit the Pha Tok caves, another for kayaking or the surrounding villages. Add one or two nights in Muang Ngoi Neua if you really want to slow down. This is the stop where our travellers most often regret having stayed only one night.
West bank or east bank?
The town of Nong Khiaw, with the bus station, is on the west bank of the Nam Ou; the village of Ban Sop Houn faces it on the east bank, where you will also find an ATM at the end of the bridge. The bridge connects the two in a few minutes on foot: the choice comes down to the view and the quiet, not the distance. The addresses "outside the village" need a tuk-tuk or a bicycle in the evening.
Should you sleep in Muang Ngoi Neua?
Yes, if you are looking for seclusion: the village is reached by boat from Nong Khiaw (about 45 minutes depending on the water level), there are no cars and wifi is limited. The accommodation there is simple only — guesthouses and bungalows — and that is precisely its charm. For more comfort, sleep in Nong Khiaw and visit Muang Ngoi for the day.
What level of comfort should you expect?
There is no 4- or 5-star hotel in the valley. The best addresses are well-kept resorts and lodges, some with a pool, air conditioning, hot water and a terrace over the river. Power cuts remain possible. Better to know it before you leave — and it is also what makes this stop so endearing.
When to go?
October to April for the dry season and the light on the cliffs. In November and December the mornings are cool and often bathed in mist: this is the most photogenic time. During the rains the Nam Ou rises and the vegetation is spectacular, but some trails become slippery.
How do you get to Nong Khiaw?
