Muang Sing, a small village in the Golden Triangle
Muang Sing is nestled in the far north of Laos, 58 kilometers from Luang Namtha and barely 10 km from the Chinese border. The small village is located in the Nam La river plain, at the gates of the Nam Ha National Biodiversity Conservation Area. Difficult to access, the village is surrounded by lush green hills and boasts an exceptional natural environment. You can get there by road from Luang Namtha after a 2-hour drive.
Despite its appearance as a peaceful small village sheltered in the mountains, Muang Sing has a rather turbulent history. Once part of the principality of Xieng Khaeng, the village was often challenged by the constant claims of neighboring kingdoms from the 18th to the 19th century. Caravans on the ancient tea route transported their goods between China, Burma, and Siam. The village was then invaded by British troops in 1895 and subsequently placed under French control as part of the opium trade. Finally, in 1946, the village was attacked by the Kuomintang, who destroyed the market and the city walls. Today, the prosperity and authenticity of the region are threatened by its Chinese neighbors, who are extending their influence beyond the borders and leasing land to expand their intensive cultivation of bananas, cassava, and rubber. Despite these occupations, the villages have managed to preserve their traditions. Only time will tell what impact this will have on the land and culture.

What to do in Muang Sing?
Muang Sing is renowned for its treks through rice paddies and villages. You can meet various ethnic groups such as the Akha, Tai Lue, Tai Neua, Lolo, Hmong, Tai Dam, Khamu, Phou Noi, and Yao. The villages can be visited on foot, by bike, or by tuk-tuk from Muang Sing. Having experienced a tourism boom about ten years ago, tourists are now very few in the village and its surroundings. This makes it the perfect place for a true off-the-beaten-path cultural experience in Laos. You will discover the rich fauna and flora during your hikes in the region. Don’t hesitate to stop at the Nam Keo and Pha Yueng waterfalls to refresh yourself before continuing your exploration. Also, every year during the full moon of the 12th month of the calendar, a festival is organized at That Xieng Thong. An event not to be missed during your visit to the region!
Muang Sing also boasts numerous temples that can be visited, notably Vat Luang, dating from the 19th century, which is the oldest, and Vat Namkeo, which is the largest and distinguished by the beauty of its architecture. Also noteworthy is the “Muang Sing Exhibitions” museum, which houses many local objects and utensils. Another point of interest is the local market, which is undoubtedly the most colorful in northern Laos and was once the largest opium market in the Golden Triangle.

What to see around Muang Sing?
Just 1 hour from Muang Sing is the city of Luang Namtha, the largest Laotian agglomeration north of Luang Prabang. The most popular activity is multi-day trekking to discover the many ethnic villages inhabiting the region. Continuing your journey a little further east, you will pass through the city of Oudomxay, the major commercial crossroads of the region connecting Laos to China. And just 45 minutes away lies the “Pearl of the North,” the Muang La Lodge, a beautiful eco-lodge with only 10 rooms located in the heart of the mountains of Northern Laos, on the lands of ethnic minorities. With a massage pavilion facing the river, a swimming pool on its private island, a sauna, and two large natural hot spring pools overlooking the landscape, the Muang La Lodge guarantees you a stay of absolute relaxation in its exclusive haven of peace.

Our Story
Jean-Paul Duvergé arrived in Laos at the turn of the 2000s, fell in love with the country, and decided to stay. In 2002, he founded Asia Safari with a simple idea: to offer French-speaking travelers direct access to authentic Lao life, without the filter of large Parisian agencies. Since then, the agency has assisted thousands of travelers, built a network of trusted guides and partners, and refined its philosophy: rigorous tailor-made travel, serving authenticity.

Area: 236,800 km² | Population: approximately 7.5 million inhabitants | Capital: Vientiane | Official language: Lao | Religion: Theravada Buddhism (65% of the population) | Currency: Lao Kip (LAK) | Time zone: UTC+7
Laos must-sees
Luang Prabang: Former royal capital, a UNESCO World Heritage site, its golden temples, French colonial houses, and gentle way of life make it an undeniable favorite.
Vientiane: The human-sized capital — That Luang, Patuxai, and the banks of the Mekong are worth a visit.
Vang Vieng: Surrounded by limestone karsts, ideal for kayaking, caving, and hiking.
Southern Laos and 4000 Islands: Champassak, the Vat Phou temples (UNESCO), the Bolaven Plateau, and the Mekong islands.
Lao culture
Theravada Buddhism permeates all of Lao life. The alms giving (offerings to monks at dawn) in Luang Prabang is a daily ritual of great beauty. Lao festivals — Boun Pi Mai (Lao New Year in April), Boun Ok Phansa (Festival of Lights) — are exceptional times to travel.
Nature and biodiversity
Laos is 70% covered by forests. Its protected areas are home to rare species: Asian elephants, gibbons, sun bears. The rivers and plateaus offer natural settings of rare purity in Asia.
