Wat Phou — The Angkor of Laos
Located 45 km from Pakse, the Wat Phou complex (UNESCO) is a pre-Angkorian temple built between the 10th and 12th centuries. Set against a sacred mountain, it exudes a more intimate and preserved atmosphere than Angkor. A perfect introduction before the great Cambodian site.
The 4,000 Islands — The gentleness of the Mekong
Si Phan Don (the 4,000 islands) is one of the most peaceful areas in Laos: islands inhabited by fishermen, hammocks facing the river, and the Khone Phapheng falls (the most powerful in Southeast Asia). Asia Safari reserves two timeless days for you there.
Angkor — The absolute must-see
Siem Reap and its temples of Angkor constitute one of the greatest archaeological wonders of the world. Asia Safari dedicates three full days for you to explore Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm, and secondary temples away from the crowds.

Is a visa required to enter Cambodia from Laos?
The Cambodian visa is available upon arrival at the land border (approximately 35 USD). Asia Safari manages the formalities and accompanies you during the border crossing.
When is the best time to visit Angkor?
November to March: dry season, cooler temperatures. Asia Safari recommends visiting Angkor early in the morning (sunrise over Angkor Wat) to avoid the crowds.
Can this tour be extended to Phnom Penh or Vietnam?
Yes. Asia Safari can organize an extension to Phnom Penh (flight from Siem Reap) or to Ho Chi Minh City for travelers wishing to continue their exploration of Indochina.

Visit of Champasak, a former royal city with an architectural heritage of colonial houses and traditional Lao houses. 8km outside the city, the magnificent temple of Wat Phou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, reveals a part of the history of the Chenla kingdom. Smaller but older than the city of Angkor in Cambodia, a magical atmosphere emanates from its ruins…
After lunch (at your leisure), visit Oum Muang, a contemporary temple of Wat Phou, built on the banks of a Mekong tributary in the middle of a forest, formerly a relay point for boats coming from Cambodia.
Return to Champasak. Dinner at your leisure and overnight stay at your hotel.

A rock formation blocks the course of the Mekong, creating falls with a 15m drop over a width of more than 10 km. This obstacle to river traffic led the colonial administration to create a railway line, the remains of which can be seen on the islands of Don Det and Don Khone. This part of the river forms a group of 4,000 islands according to legend. They can be explored on foot, by bicycle, or by motorbike, without encountering any cars.
Lunch (at your leisure) on Khone Island by the Mekong. Navigation on the river, through a landscape of islands and rapids unique in Southeast Asia.

Crossing the border from the small port of Nakasang, located on the mainland.
En route, stop at the Khone Phapheng falls, whose flow breaks the nonchalance of the Mekong.
Assistance with formalities at the Voeung Kam/Tra Peang Kreal border post and entry into the Kingdom of Cambodia. Continuation towards Preah Vihear province and lunch at your leisure.

Early departure for the temple of Preah Vihear, one of the most majestic temples of the Angkorian era, built over 2 centuries and completed by Suryavarman II, the builder of Angkor Wat. The various buildings, listed as UNESCO World Heritage, spread across the slopes of a rocky promontory overlooking the Cambodian plain, 500m from the Thai border.
Lunch at your leisure and continuation through the Khmer countryside towards other temples: Koh Ker, a pre-Angkorian complex, then Beng Mealea, a prototype of Angkor Wat, overgrown and broken apart by vegetation. A vision almost identical to those of the first explorers.
In the late afternoon, arrival in Siem Reap, a large town located near the temples. Dinner at your leisure and overnight stay at your hotel.

Morning exploration of Angkor Thom, a vast architectural ensemble accessed through five monumental gates, with the Bayon mountain temple at its center, famous for its towers with 172 faces of Avalokiteshvara. The visit continues with Prasat Baphuon and its large reclining Buddha.
Stroll within the grounds of the former Royal Palace where the Phimeanakas sanctuary is located before arriving at the Terraces of the Elephants and the Leper King.
Lunch at your leisure, then visit Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with five slender towers and splendid bas-reliefs. A masterpiece of Khmer art.

The temple of Ta Prohm is a former monastery dating from 1186, very much in ruins and overgrown by vegetation. It is one of the most important buildings in Angkor, built by Jayavarman VII. It was decided to leave it in the arms of Mother Nature, who has taken possession of it.
Lunch at your leisure then visit Banteay Srei (Citadel of the Women), considered by many to be the jewel of classical Khmer art.
Among the stops on the way to Siem Reap, a few villages and also the sanctuary of Banteay Samre, a small masterpiece of the classical period, masterfully restored.

When to visit Laos?

Lao culture
Theravada Buddhism has an important place in Laos, alongside a variety of cultural traditions. In Luang Prabang, the monks’ morning alms round is a religious ritual to observe with discretion and respect. Boun Pi Mai, Lao New Year in April, and Boun Ok Phansa, which marks the end of the Buddhist rains retreat, are among the events that shape the year.
