Little known to hurried tourists, Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi Neua are two hidden gems in northern Laos. Nestled in a setting of vertiginous limestone cliffs on the banks of the Nam Ou River, these two villages offer an authentic immersion in rural Laos, far from the crowds.

Nong Khiaw: the village between the cliffs

Nong Khiaw is a stopover village that slowly wakes up on the banks of the Nam Ou, about 4 hours from Luang Prabang by road or 3 hours by boat. The village is split in two by a suspension bridge, with accommodation and restaurants mainly on the east side. The limestone cliffs that surround it give it an incomparable wild beauty, especially at sunrise, when mist rises from the rice fields.

What to do in Nong Khiaw?

  • Hike to the cliffs: the viewpoint at the top offers a panoramic view over the Nam Ou Valley and the surrounding mountains
  • Visit the Pha Tok caves: these caves served as shelters during the American bombings — a moving history and an impressive site
  • Kayaking on the Nam Ou: a kayak descent through the cliffs, with the option to stop in villages along the way
  • Cycling through the surrounding Hmong and Khmu villages — the locals are welcoming and the countryside is magnificent

Muang Ngoi Neua: absolute isolation

A 45-minute boat ride north of Nong Khiaw, Muang Ngoi Neua is one of the most isolated villages in Laos. Inaccessible by road (only by boat or on foot), with no cars or motorbikes, the village lives to the rhythm of boatmen and farmers. Electricity is limited, Wi-Fi almost non-existent — and that is precisely what makes it so charming.

What to do in Muang Ngoi?

  • Trek to the surrounding villages: trails leave the village for hamlets of ethnic minorities still preserved from mass tourism
  • Swimming in the river: the Nam Ou sandbanks invite contemplation
  • Observing the fishing villages: life flows slowly, children play by the water, women weave beneath stilt houses
  • Caves around the village: several caves are accessible on foot from the center

How to get there

From Luang Prabang, the road to Nong Khiaw (about 150 km) is now fully paved and takes 3 to 4 hours by private vehicle. By boat from Luang Prabang, allow about 3 hours on the Nam Ou. From Nong Khiaw to Muang Ngoi, the local boat takes 45 minutes.

Where to stay in Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi?

Both villages offer simple but charming accommodation — wooden stilt bungalows, river views, hammocks under the palm trees. Do not look for large hotels: it is precisely the simplicity that makes the magic of these places.
