Khammouane Province

Khammouane Province is situated between Bolikhamxay Province to the north and the southern region of Laos, Savannakhet. It is also bordered by the Vietnamese frontier to the east and the Mekong River to the west, which forms the border with Thailand. Located 350 km south of Vientiane, the region is only accessible by road and is relatively difficult to reach. It is also connected to Thailand by the Third Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge.

What to do in the Khammouane region?

The Khammouane region is renowned for its wild beauty and preserved nature, where karst cliffs and lush jungle take shape amidst five National Protected Areas and a vast area classified as a National Biodiversity Conservation Area. It features beautiful waterfalls nestled in the mountains, including Tad Nam Sanam and Tad Mouang.

You will see impressive caves, particularly in the Phou Hin Boun protected area, where you can visit the Kong Lor caves during the dry season. The turquoise water of the Hin Bun River flows peacefully for about 7.5 km, and it is possible to board a motorized pirogue to venture deep into the cave. The Tham Pha Pa cave, near Thakhek, gained media attention following the discovery of 229 Buddha statues in one of the cave’s previously unexplored excavations. This sacred pilgrimage site is now well protected by the villagers.
Finally, you can explore the impressive Tham Nang Aen cave, which is over 30m high and extends for one kilometer. It features an inner lake surrounded by numerous stalactites and stalagmites.

The most important town in the region is Thakhek, a quiet town located on the banks of the Mekong. The peaceful alleys of the old town center and its colonial houses with their quaint charm invite you for a stroll. Approximately 8 km south of Thakhek, you can discover Pha That Sikhottabong, also known as Vat Sikhottabong or Pha That Meuang Ka. It dates back to the 19th century and houses a large seated Buddha statue commissioned by King Anouvong (Chao Anou).
Thakhek is also the starting point for excursions into the Khammouane karst massif. The Thakhek loop offers an exceptional circuit through the Phou Hin Boun National Protected Park (2 to 5 days), allowing you to discover the beauty of the Laotian countryside. The region is dotted with small lakes and lagoons with turquoise water, including the famous emerald lake of Khoun Kong Leng, which is said to be about 70m deep. Sumptuous landscapes in the heart of karst mountains, caves, waterfalls, blue lagoons, and dense jungle will delight adventurers!

    When to visit Laos?

    From November to February, the weather is generally drier and temperatures are milder. March and April are often hotter. The rainy season, from May to October, brings lush green landscapes; we adapt the itinerary and transport to local conditions.

    Entry requirements depend on your nationality, the length of your stay and your point of entry. Depending on your circumstances, you may apply for an e-Visa or a visa on arrival. The tourist e-Visa allows a stay of 30 days and can only be used at designated entry points. We help you check which procedures apply to your trip.

    Jean-Paul Duvergé has worked in Laos since 2000. In 2002, he founded Asia Safari in Vientiane to design tailor-made trips in Laos and Indochina. Today, the agency’s French-Lao team plans each itinerary with its travellers and coordinates arrangements on the ground with its local guides and partners.

    Laos covers 236,800 km² and had a population of around 7.9 million in 2025. Its capital is Vientiane, its official language is Lao and its currency is the Lao kip (LAK). Theravada Buddhism is the main religion. The country is in the UTC+7 time zone.

    Lao culture

    Theravada Buddhism has an important place in Laos, alongside a variety of cultural traditions. In Luang Prabang, the monks’ morning alms round is a religious ritual to observe with discretion and respect. Boun Pi Mai, Lao New Year in April, and Boun Ok Phansa, which marks the end of the Buddhist rains retreat, are among the events that shape the year.

    The forests and protected areas of Laos are home to a variety of wildlife, including Asian elephants, gibbons and sun bears. Rivers, mountains and plateaus offer many opportunities to explore nature.
