The Pak Ou Caves
Have you ever heard of the Pak Ou Caves? Nestled in the heart of the karst cliffs about thirty kilometers from Luang Prabang, the two caves Tham Ting and Tham Poum house some 4,000 wooden Buddha statues. It is a pilgrimage site for the Lao people who have been depositing them for hundreds of years.
Pak Ou Caves: ຖໍ້າປາກອູ

You can reach them by boat, along the Mekong River, from Pakbeng or Luang Prabang. You will be dropped off at the foot of a superb limestone cliff where the caves are located.
The word “Pak” in Lao refers to the confluence of two rivers (or literally the mouth) and has given its name to the towns located there. The Pak Ou Caves are therefore located at the confluence of the Nam Ou River and the Mekong.
A staircase provides easy access for pilgrims and tourists. According to history, kings would come on the third day following the Lao New Year (Pimai festival) to perform the ritual of washing the Buddhas. Before becoming a pilgrimage site in the 16th century, according to local legends, the caves were inhabited by the nagas, protectors of Luang Prabang, and still retain vestiges of their divine representations on the cave walls.
What to see around the Pak Ou Caves?
Luang Prabang is a city famous for its history and architecture reflecting its colonial past, as well as its superb royal palace, local craft markets and shops, golden temples, and the climb up Mount Phousi in the heart of the city to witness a sublime sunset over the mountains.
The village of Pakbeng will be an important stop if you choose to come to Laos by cruise from Thailand (Chiang Mai) and want to visit the Pak Ou Caves.
The Kuang Si Falls are an essential site during your visit to the Luang Prabang region. Its turquoise water pools, in the middle of the jungle, are set in a sublime natural setting. It is also the ideal place for a picnic in the middle of your day trip. Other beautiful waterfalls, but less well-known, are the Tad Sae Falls where you might encounter elephants. The best time to visit the waterfalls is just after the monsoon, when the rains have subsided but the flow of the waterfalls is still impressive!
If you prefer nature, you can also meet the elephants of our partner Mandalao for an unforgettable day or stroll through the Pha Tad Ke botanical garden which is full of natural wonders.

Laos in figures
Laos covers 236,800 km² and had a population of around 7.9 million in 2025. Its capital is Vientiane, its official language is Lao and its currency is the Lao kip (LAK). Theravada Buddhism is the main religion. The country is in the UTC+7 time zone.
Laos must-sees
Luang Prabang: Former royal capital, a UNESCO World Heritage site, its golden temples, French colonial houses, and gentle way of life make it an undeniable favorite.
Vientiane: The human-sized capital — That Luang, Patuxai, and the banks of the Mekong are worth a visit.
Vang Vieng: Surrounded by limestone karsts, ideal for kayaking, caving, and hiking.
Southern Laos and 4000 Islands: Champassak, the Vat Phou temples (UNESCO), the Bolaven Plateau, and the Mekong islands.
Lao culture
Theravada Buddhism has an important place in Laos, alongside a variety of cultural traditions. In Luang Prabang, the monks’ morning alms round is a religious ritual to observe with discretion and respect. Boun Pi Mai, Lao New Year in April, and Boun Ok Phansa, which marks the end of the Buddhist rains retreat, are among the events that shape the year.
Nature and biodiversity
The forests and protected areas of Laos are home to a variety of wildlife, including Asian elephants, gibbons and sun bears. Rivers, mountains and plateaus offer many opportunities to explore nature.
