Muang Khua is not a must-stop on your Laos travel itinerary and is of little interest compared with Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi. However, Muang Khua is a must for those who want to take a boat cruise on the Nam Ou River and for crossing from Laos to Vietnam overland at the Dien Bien Phu border post (around 50 km).

What to do in Muang Khua?

The village
The village has a large main street running along the Nam Ou River and a small port set up on a sandy beach. Time passes peacefully here, and it is pleasant to stroll through the village, cross the bridge and enjoy the lovely view over the Nam Ou River. A few typically Lao restaurants can be found in the village, as well as a small local market. Take the opportunity to try “sindad”, the local BBQ! Of course, with the development of tourism in Laos, the town now has a few guesthouses and budget accommodations that delight slightly adventurous backpackers.

Let yourself be lulled by a cruise on the Nam Ou River and take in the scenery that will take your breath away! Muang Khua is the embarkation point for a 5-hour cruise on the Nam Ou to Nong Khiaw, which can also be done in the opposite direction. Little visited, this region offers dense forest that in places covers superb karst mountains. This trip also allows you to discover small authentic villages and observe the peaceful life of the inhabitants along the river.
