Just 29 kilometers southwest of Luang Prabang, the Kuang Si Waterfall (also spelled Tat Kuang Si or Kouang Si) is one of Southeast Asia’s most beautiful waterfalls. Its turquoise waters cascading down limestone terraces into natural pools framed by tropical vegetation make this site an absolute must-see on any trip to Luang Prabang.
Site Description
The main Kuang Si waterfall plunges 50 meters into a first pool, before cascading down several levels through the forest. The translucent turquoise color of the water — due to the high concentration of calcium carbonate — is striking and changes slightly with the seasons. The lower pools are accessible for swimming, making Kuang Si an ideal place to swim in a paradisiacal setting.
The Bear Rescue Center
At the entrance to the site, a rescue center for Asiatic black bears, managed by the Free the Bears association, houses bears rescued from poaching and illegal trade. Admission to the center is included in the ticket price. These bears cannot be released into the wild but lead a dignified life in this semi-natural space. An unmissable stop, especially with children.
How to Get to Kuang Si from Luang Prabang
Several options are available:
- Tuk-tuk or private van: the most comfortable way, about 20–30 minutes drive
- Bicycle: for the most adventurous and athletic, the bike path runs alongside the road for a large part of the journey
- Combined boats: some providers offer the outward journey by boat on the Mekong and the return by tuk-tuk (or vice versa)
Practical Tips for Your Visit
- Opening hours: 8:00 AM–5:30 PM daily. The site closes early — don’t leave Luang Prabang too late
- Best time to visit: from October to early December, just after the rainy season, when the water flow is maximal and colors are most intense
- Swimwear: bring your swimsuit to bathe in the lower pools
- Arrive early: the site fills up quickly during high season. Arrive as soon as it opens to enjoy the tranquil pools
- Picnic: local vendors offer food at the entrance, or bring your own lunch to eat by the water
The Hike to the Source
A marked trail starts from the bottom of the site and climbs up to the source of the waterfall, about a 1.5-hour round trip walk through the forest. The ascent is moderate but requires good shoes. The view from the top of the forest and the first pools is magnificent, and few visitors make this walk — a beautiful moment of serenity.
