The message we get most often goes something like this: “We really want to see Laos, but we do not want to give up the beach.” The answer is simple: do both. Thailand and Laos share the Mekong, a closely related cuisine and the same dry season. From our office in Vientiane we build these two-country trips all year round, and autumn is when the December-to-February departures get booked. Here is how we put one together, with the entry rules as they stand in September 2026.

Why Laos and Thailand work so well together

The two countries complement each other rather than repeat each other. Thailand brings ease: direct long-haul flights, excellent roads, beach hotels of every standard. Laos brings what Thailand has traded away while developing: towns without traffic, villages where you are still received as a guest, a Mekong with no concrete on its banks. Doing one after the other means moving from lively to quiet, or the other way round, without ever changing atmosphere abruptly.

In practice most of our travelers link northern Thailand, northern Laos and a Thai island. That is exactly the shape of our Northern Laos & Thai Beaches tour (18 days): Chiang Rai, the Mekong down to Pakbeng, the forests of Oudomxay, Nong Khiaw, Luang Prabang, and finally Koh Chang before the flight home from Bangkok.

Three ways to cross between the two countries

The Laos-Thailand border is not an obstacle, it is a routing decision. Three crossings genuinely matter for travelers.

By river: Chiang Khong, Huay Xai and the slow boat

This is the crossing we like best. Leave Chiang Rai in the morning, cross Friendship Bridge IV at Chiang Khong, and board the boat at Huay Xai. Two days on the Mekong, a night in Pakbeng, and you arrive in Luang Prabang by water, the finest way to enter the town. The public slow boat costs roughly 400,000 kip per person for both days; on our tours we use a private boat, more comfortable and with stops in riverside villages. We wrote a full guide to the Mekong slow boat.

By rail: the Bangkok-Vientiane night train

Since July 2024 a direct train has linked Bangkok with Khamsavath station, 7 km from central Vientiane. Train 133 leaves Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat station in the evening and pulls in around 9:00 the next morning, after roughly twelve hours; an air-conditioned second-class sleeper berth costs about 800 to 900 baht. Thai exit formalities happen at Nong Khai, Lao immigration at Khamsavath. It is the ideal link for a Bangkok – Vientiane – Luang Prabang rail journey, with the Laos-China Railway covering the second leg in two hours. No domestic flights at all.

By air: Bangkok or Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang

Bangkok Airways, Lao Airlines and Thai AirAsia fly Bangkok to Luang Prabang in about two hours, almost daily in high season. This is the answer for shorter holidays: a week in Laos between two Thai chapters without losing a day on the road. Direct flights from Chiang Mai run in some seasons; we check the timetable when we prepare your quote.

Visas and paperwork: what changed in September 2026

Read this section before every departure, because the rules moved this year.

Thailand: 30 days visa-free, no longer 60

The 60-day visa exemption that most European, British, Australian and North American passport holders have enjoyed since 2024 dropped back to 30 days on 15 September 2026. For a typical two- to three-week combination this changes nothing. If you plan more than a month in Thailand, a 30-day extension is available at an immigration office for 1,900 baht. One useful detail: each entry into Thailand starts a fresh count. Land entries are another matter: since 15 September, visa-exempt entries by road or rail are limited to two per calendar year. On the itinerary below you fly back into Thailand, so the question does not arise. Landing in Bangkok, spending ten days in Laos and coming back for the beach counts as two separate stays.

The other new item is the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC): free, completed online within three days before each entry, including by land. You therefore have to fill it in again before returning from Laos. Our travelers receive the official link in their travel documents.

Laos: visa on arrival or e-visa

Laos, on the other hand, requires a visa for most Western passports. Two options: the visa on arrival (30 days, around 40 US dollars depending on nationality, paid in cash, one passport photo), or the e-visa on the official portal laoevisa.gov.la, slightly more expensive but it skips the queue. Mind the entry point: the e-visa is accepted at Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Pakse airports, at Friendship Bridges I (Nong Khai), II (Savannakhet) and IV (Huay Xai), and at Khamsavath and Boten railway stations. It is not valid at Friendship Bridge III in Thakhek. Since September 2025 Laos also has a digital immigration form, to be submitted before entry and again before exit. Details are in our Laos visa guide.

A tip from the office: bring crisp US dollar notes in small denominations for the Lao visa. Torn or marked bills are refused at the counter, and the nearest ATM is sometimes on the other side of the bridge.

When to go: one dry season on both sides

This is the great strength of the combination: from November to February, northern Thailand and Laos are at their best, dry, cool in the morning and around 25 to 30 C in the afternoon. December and January are the busiest months, so book Luang Prabang hotels several months ahead. Koh Chang, in the eastern Gulf of Thailand, is dry from November to April, perfect for the finale.

March and April are hot and agricultural haze blurs the north; May to October is the green season, glorious in Laos but wet on Koh Chang and the Andaman coast alike. If you travel then, we simply swap the island: Koh Samui, drier in summer, closes a July or August trip very nicely. Our article on the best time to visit Laos goes month by month.

A sample 18-day itinerary

This is the outline we propose most often, the Northern Laos & Thai Beaches tour. It shrinks to two weeks by dropping Oudomxay, or grows with Vientiane and the south.

  • Days 1-2 – Chiang Rai. Arrival, the White Temple, the night market, then the road to Chiang Khong and the crossing of Bridge IV. First Lao night in Pakbeng, on the river.
  • Days 3-5 – Oudomxay and the Nam Kat forest. A riverside lodge, Khmu and Hmong villages, the Nam Kat waterfall. This is the Laos few visitors see.
  • Days 6-8 – Nong Khiaw. Down the Nam Ou between the cliffs, swimming, cycling through rice fields, a sunrise viewpoint.
  • Days 9-12 – Luang Prabang. The dawn alms round, Wat Xieng Thong, Kuang Si falls, a free day to wander. Our Luang Prabang and Northern Laos tour covers this part on its own in 10 days.
  • Days 13-17 – Koh Chang. Flight Luang Prabang-Bangkok, transfer to the island, five days of beach.
  • Day 18 – Bangkok. Flight home.

Five things to know before you book

  • Enter Laos from the north, leave by air. Chiang Rai – Mekong – Luang Prabang – flight to Bangkok keeps the river for the start and avoids backtracking.
  • Do not count beach days in Lao days. Luang Prabang-Bangkok flights often leave midday; the first beach evening is rarely a full one.
  • Two currencies, two habits. Baht comes out of any ATM and cards work almost everywhere in Thailand; in Laos, carry kip in cash from Huay Xai onwards.
  • Check your passport. Six months of validity after your exit date and at least two blank pages: Lao immigration is generous with stamps.
  • Redo the TDAC before returning to Thailand. It is the form everyone forgets on the boat.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Laos if I am coming from Thailand?

Yes, for most Western passports. Get a visa on arrival at the bridge or airport, or apply online for an e-visa beforehand, making sure your entry point accepts it.

How long is the slow boat from Thailand to Luang Prabang?

Two days on the Mekong from Huay Xai, with an overnight stop in Pakbeng. Boats leave in the morning and reach Luang Prabang mid-afternoon on the second day.

Is there a train from Bangkok to Laos?

Yes. A direct night train runs from Bangkok to Vientiane Khamsavath in about twelve hours, and the Laos-China Railway continues to Luang Prabang in about two hours.

What is the best month for a Laos and Thailand trip?

November to February: dry and cool in northern Laos and Thailand, and dry on the Gulf islands. Book early for December and January.

What we take care of

Asia Safari has been based in Vientiane since 2002. On a two-country trip we handle the Lao part from end to end, guides, private boat, lodges, transfers, and coordinate the Thai part with our partners in Chiang Rai and Bangkok, so you deal with one contact and one set of travel documents. Visas, digital forms and flight schedules are re-checked for every file: they are the details that change fastest, and keeping up with them is our job.
